Title: Dreams and Treachery
Requested by: go_hifreann_lea
Notes: I am hugely sorry for how short (;;;;) and, well, not that good this turned out to be. Pretty much every idea I had for this fic just kept falling through, and in the end I just had to write something. Again, you have my apologies. Also, this is really weirdly AU, so uh...be warned.
Soi Fong had been having this dream for the five years since the witch who had summoned her had vanished.
In her dream, she stood in the center of the strange bustling human city Yoruichi had made her home, with its lights flashing all around her. People jostled alien and quick around her, but all she could see was Yoruichi walking down the crowded streets. The other people, they could be ignored. But not Yoruichi.
And then Yoruichi stopped to take a pamphlet that someone or another was handing out, and suddenly she stepped away, and she was gone. Soi Fong looked to one side and then the other, but there was no finding her.
In her dream, she began pushing the other people aside, out of the picture. They faded. The streets grew empty, until all that was left were the glittering lights of the city center. Each time, Soi Fong was sure that when everyone else was gone, she would finally see Yoruichi again. And each time, when everyone was gone, all that was left were the empty streets and the glittering lights.
It had been nothing like this in reality, of course. In reality, Soi Fong had simply woken up one morning to find that the little apartment she shared with Yoruichi was cool and empty. That was the worst part: she had been sleeping when it happened.
When she woke up from the dream, as always, she was back in that apartment again on the cold little bed. For somewhere she worked so hard to pay for, it was rather small and bare. But then, that was the way of the human world, especially in such a city. Soi Fong had long since ceased to question it. The only person who had ever given her answers that satisfied her was Yoruichi, and she was gone now, taking her answers with her.
There was another dream she had, some nights. In this dream, she was human, a part of Yoruichi's world--maybe a witch like her, or maybe not. For some reason, even though Yoruichi's magic was why she was here in the first place, in these dreams it didn't matter. All that mattered was that the two of them were both there together.
These were the best dreams, and it was for that reason that they were the traitor-dreams. She woke from them a little bit frightened. It was wrong that she should want so badly to give up all that she was and all that she was supposed to be for the sake of this human love.
Soi Fong was glad she told no one of her true self, or of Yoruichi. This meant that there was no one to ask her, "But have you ever tried finding her?"
Her own traitor heart asking her that question sometimes was more than enough.
She didn't need to find Yoruichi. She would be strong without her. And one day, when she was strong enough, she would finally leave this human sphere. Return to the spirit world whence she came.
Of course, she should have gone back long ago. But Yoruichi had taken her heart with her when she fled, or so it felt, and Soi Fong was forever bound to her. Wherever she was.
Someday she would be able to take her heart back coldly and without care. But for now, there were days when she woke up from those dreams with human tears on her pillow.
