Tatsuki and Orihime sat in silence, neither knowing what to say. Orihime’s heavy breathing the only sound they heard. Tatsuki glanced up at Orihime, whose head hung low, her small hands curled into tight fists in her lap.
She had been this way since school started. Tatsuki wondered what had happened in the summer to make Orihime so depressed. Normally, Orihime had a bundle of exaggerated stories to ramble about when she came back to school but this summer had obviously been different.
It was almost as if something had broken the always smiling Orihime.
Tatsuki’s hands fell into her own lap, biting her lip. Seeing Orihime this hopeless was a terrible sign that Tatsuki had failed. She had promised to protect her happiness. Tatsuki swore Orihime would never cry or frown ever again as long as she was there.
Tatsuki swallowed back a heavy lump in her throat. So in the end, I couldn’t do anything. She thought.
The dark-haired female jerked her head up, staring at Orihime. Orihime had a small, sad smile on her face, playing with the edge of her skirt.
“Am I weak, Tatsuki?” she asked.
Tatsuki gazed into the grey orbs that always held a cheerful sparkle in them. Not today. They had been gone since Tatsuki had reunited with her. Orihime looked away, her vibrant hair falling over her face.
“I wanted to help them but I just ended up being a burden.” Orihime said.
“Orihime…” Tatsuki breathed.
“But isn’t it always like that?” Orihime beamed at Tatsuki.
Tatsuki felt her stomach twist. This wasn’t how Orihime was supposed to behave… this wasn’t the Orihime Tatsuki knew.
“I mess up all the time. I think I’m helping but everyone else is better off and I–” she faltered.
Tatsuki thought for a moment.
“Orihime,” she put a hand on her friend’s shoulder. “There’s nothing wrong. The point is you tried, it’s the effort that counts.” She said in a gentle voice. She felt Orihime’s shoulder shake under her touch.
“I don’t think I even put enough effort…” Orihime remembered Kurosaki-kun’s determination. In comparison to her own, Orihime’s strength was nothing.
“You know Orihime,” Tatsuki’s arm wrapped around Orihime, pulling her in. “The fact you were able to admit your weakness proves you’re a strong person.”
Orihime’s eyes widened. Tatsuki was such a wonderful friend, always sticking up for her when she needed it.
“Tatsuki… I’m sorry…” Orihime’s voice cracked and she began to cry. “I’m sorry for being such a baby…” she buried her face into Tatsuki’s lap.
Tatsuki stared at the orange head that shook in her lap. Tatsuki’s head dropped, her shoulders sagged and she shut her eyes. She couldn’t cry in front of Orihime. After all, it was her job to keep Orihime from crying.
You’re crying because I always stick up for you? I’m making you cry?
She moved her arms around Tatsuki, leaning her forehead onto Orihime. Orihime cried harder, making Tatsuki rub her eyes.
“I’m no good…” Tatsuki whispered.
Tatsuki just wasn’t as strong as she thought.
It's pretty short x.x I hope you like it. This is my first time writing any kind of BLEACH fanfiction!
